Salted Words, Enlightened Souls: The Catechetical Public Speaking Competition
The Catechetical Ministry recently hosted a series of engaging and thought-provoking events aimed at nurturing the students’ public speaking skills. On the 25th of June, the Catechetical Ministry together with the Family Day team organized a Public Speaking Competition, catering to various age groups. The day witnessed a storytelling competition for the nursery, standards 1 and 2 students, as well as a team debate for Forms 3, 4, and 5. The debates revolved around significant topics such as the perceived conflict between science and religion, forgiveness for domestic violence offenders, and the impact of freedom on personal growth and maturity.
Continuing the momentum, on the 2nd of July, the ministry organized an assembly to announce the winners of the Arts Competition. Rev. Msgr. James Gnanapiragasam was present to grace this occasion. On the same day, the ministry also held the storytelling competitions for Standards 3, 4, and 5 in both English and Tamil classes and Public Speaking competition for Standard 6, Forms 1, and 2 concurrently. The students showcased their oratory skills by delivering powerful speeches on topics like the uniqueness of Catholic teachings compared to other faiths and the responsible use of social media from a godly perspective.
These events serve a greater purpose by helping the students become the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world,” as emphasized in the Bible. By participating in public speaking competitions, the students develop effective communication skills, enabling them to articulate their thoughts and beliefs with confidence. They learn to express their opinions while respecting the views of others, fostering a spirit of dialogue and understanding.
Furthermore, the topics explored during these competitions encourage critical thinking and introspection, enabling the students to develop a deeper understanding of their faith and its relevance in the modern world. By engaging in discussions on conflicts between science and religion or addressing social issues like domestic violence and responsible social media usage, the students are encouraged to reflect on their beliefs, strengthen their values, and actively contribute to making the world a better place.
Congratulations to all the winners for their outstanding performances and to the Catechetical Ministry for organizing these enriching events that empower the students to shine as beacons of light and ambassadors of their faith.
