Living Liturgy
To Preach and to Practice: You may remember a quote attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, “Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.” Whether the saint said this or not, this quote has taken hold of our imagination and allowed us to reflect on the quality of our ministerial efforts. While we embrace the wisdom of these words or reject it as compromise, it is hard to deny the deep commitment to preaching and practice, or to proclamation and embodiment of the gospel message.
Today we hear “actions speak louder than words,” which reminds us of the inconsistencies present in some way within our lives and Christian ministries. The reminder comes in being consistent about both worshipping God and following Christ, and the journey to that meeting point which must include a conversion of the heart offered by John the Baptist. What we say ought to inform and manifest in what we do. When these two are in conflict (saying and doing), our witness of faith is compromised and those who seek to belong to our community (especially younger seekers) receive, at best, an incoherent message and, at worst, an insincere one. A change of mind should be accompanied by a change of heart. How might we send a clear message of faith and action through the work of worship and liturgical ministry?
In truth, a change of heart resists the temptation to sustain places of power and privilege, which compromises authority and credibility. In the example of St. Francis of Assisi, imagine the radical life of peace, grace, and love characterized by Christ, bringing community together, a gathering of believers that practice humility and love over self-righteousness and bigotry. Our words and actions in ministry hope to carry God’s love through these more nuanced words attributed to the saint, “It no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching.”
PROMPTS FOR FAITH-SHARING
- Do you identify more with the first or second son in Jesus’s parable? Do you feel frustration or relief at this gospel passage?
- Do you identify more with the chief priests and elders that Jesus addresses or the tax collectors and prostitutes whose place in the
kingdom he affirms? Why do you think that is? - In what ways do you feel you succeed in answering the second reading’s call to look out for the interests of others? In what ways could you improve?
