CATECHESIS
Living Liturgy
Understanding Gift: The second reading of today reminds us of the importance of recognizing our diverse gifts while celebrating our unity in God. St. Paul tells us that the Holy Spirit is the one who brings together the many-while we are all different, we are united by the same Holy Spirit. In a Pentecost homily, Pope Francis comments that the secret of unity in the church, the secret of the Spirit, in gift. He continues to say: “It is important to believe that God is gift, that he acts not by taking away, but by giving. Why is this important? Because our way of being believers depends on how we understand God. If we have in mind a God who takes away and who imposes himself, we too will want to take away and impose ourselves: occupying spaces, demanding recognition, seeking power. But if we have in our hearts a God who is gift, everything changes. If we realize that what we are is his gift, free and unmerited, then we will want to make our lives a gift. By loving humbly, serving freely and joy fully, we will offer to the world the true image of God. The Spirit, the living memory of the Church, reminds us that we are born from a gift and that we grow by giving: not by holding on but by giving of ourselves” (May 31, 2020). So, in our ministerial contexts, what is our understanding of God?
The gospel reading reminds us that we are also called to be a reconciling presence in the world. This is one way of sharing our gifts with the world, as agents of reconciliation. If our ministry setting is a multicultural one, what steps do we take to celebrate unity in diversity? How might we highlight cultural differences to create a welcome and inclusive space for the Spirit to work in?
PROMPTS FOR FAITH-SHARING
- Jesus promises peace in the gospel. Where in your life do you need the peace of Christ?
- Name the cultures of which you are a part, remembering that “culture” here can be as small as family culture and can include things like age, profession, and social location. What aspects of your culture do you find limiting when it comes to preaching the gospel? How might the Holy Spirit be inviting you to overcome these divisions?
- The second reading reminds us that the Spirit unites us as one body. What role do you play in the Body of Christ? How do you need others to support you?
