In conjunction with International Women’s Day 2023, the Women’s Ministry from St. Joseph’s Church, Sentul (SJC) animated the Saturday Sunset mass on the 11th of March followed by a breakfast sale and an Awesome Women Award ceremony on Sunday, the 12th of March. The ‘Awesome Women’ award ceremony saw a total of 30 women being honoured after careful consideration for serving in home, church and also the community. They are women who extraordinarily serve with dedication going the extra miles to reach out to families and societies in need.
Rev. Fr. Frederick Joseph emphasized that women should unleash their talents, skills and lauded well the contribution of women to the parish as leaders, which consist of 80 percent of congregants. “The parish encourages more women to come forward and serve the church. We will source out and find the right talents and skills from our women parishioners to be a part of this ministry and in other ministries too” he said.
SJC Women’s Ministry has been formed since Nov. 2015. The main focus of this Ministry is to Enact, Educate, Empower, Advocate and bring awareness to women from all walks of life. Their projects include; Women & Health (Breast Cancer Awareness program), Domestic Violence against Women n Children, Women & Economics. Empowering Women on building home based business to generate extra income to support their family etc.
During the pandemic in 2020, the ministry kicked off several projects by making hygiene kit pack for the community affected by flood and was later sent to Ukraine via Caritas Malaysia for women & children in war zone areas.
The ladies also sewn hundreds of face masks that was sent to the schools in Malacca, several refugees schools and also to the schools in Sri Lanka together with Pyjamas sewn by our sisters from Myanmar community which was taken to Nepal by an NGO last November.
Award recipient Mary Wilson extended her gratitude to the Women’s Ministry for recognizing her as an ‘Awesome Women’ of the parish.”Thanks to the Ministry for selecting me and honoring me with this award. I was shocked at first and did not see this coming. “Thanks to all the ladies who worked hard behind this award ceremony to make this a successful event. God bless,”she said.
The wing’s new leader, Judith Patrick extended her appreciation to be a part of the women’s team and is looking forward to journeying with this ministry to carry out many community projects and continue the mission.
The breakfast sale that morning saw many local spreads like mee hoon Siam and nasi lemak as well as chapatis and parotas which was the highlight of the day.
To mark the theme of Embrace Equity, the women also sold their sewn scrunches in purple n green on the day.
About 100 parishioners attended the award ceremony after patronizing the breakfast sale.
