International Women’s Day was celebrated at St.Joseph’s Parish on 10th March with the theme ‘Balance for Better’ which primarily focused on Think Equal – Build Smart and Innovate, for change in ways we can advance gender equality and the empowerment of women very especially in areas of social protection systems both in community and home for a sustainable infrastructure within our work surroundings.
Organised by the Women’s Ministry, the day started off with the celebration of mass both in Tamil and English, followed by breakfast. A variety of activities was held that day with the highlights being ‘Pampering the Queen in You’ and ‘Awesome Women Award’.
The team from the Women’s Ministry roped in volunteers from the Parish, the migrant community, as well as youths from other faith groups. The volunteers underwent a crash course to become an instant beautician for the following treatments; eye brow threading, head & shoulder massage, hair styling, henna and manicure. A total of 100 women signed up for the pampering session which cost them RM30 per person with a lunch pack for free. The participants had a wonderful time and even requested that the beauty sessions be conducted once a month as part of the Women’s Ministry activity.
The Women’s Ministry hopes to make the ‘Awesome Women Award’ a regular feature for their annual event. Making its debut last year, a total of 40 women till date (20 in 2018 and 20 this year) were given recognition for their various contributions, be it in their homes, BECs, the Parish or even their workplace. These women were nominated by their respective family and friends, based on criteria set by the organisers. The main criteria were as follows:-
- Must be 55 years of age and above with a background story of her accomplishments that qualifies her as an outstanding Awesome Women Honouree.
- In what way has the nominee made a difference in her home, BEC, church, community or society.
Our Parish priest, Rev Fr. George graced the occasion and presented the certificates and shawls to each of the award nominees. We had a variation of recipient that aged from the oldest (87 years) to the youngest (57 years) that morning.
Family members and friends of the recipients as well as other well wishers were also present for the occasion and took the opportunity to participate in the various activities planned for the day.
The event ended with a sumptuous lunch of ‘Nasi Goreng Kampung’, fried chicken, ‘Sambal Tumis’ and cucumber.
It was indeed heartening to see many of our parishioners, attending the event. We wish to sincerely thank them all for their prayers and support. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Reverend Fathers for the support they have for the Ministry.
We Enact, We Educate, We Empower, We Advocate and bring Awareness to the Women around us.
