First Holy Communion Camp: Embracing Faith with Youthful Spirit
Theme: “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them” – Matthew 19:14
On the 19th and 20th of October 2024, the St. Joseph Youths organized the First Holy Communion Camp for the year 3 students, welcoming 22 children from our church and 5 from Risen Christ Church. The two-day retreat provided a meaningful foundation for 27 students preparing for the sacrament of Holy Communion.
The camp, guided by the theme “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them,” was coordinated by Merisha, our dedicated assistant youth leader, with support from Teren and Andro, the youth leaders. Despite her limited experience, Merisha’s patience and one-on-one approach left a lasting impression, showing us all how to connect deeply with young hearts.
The first day began with a warm breakfast prepared by the students’ parents, ensuring the children were energized and ready for a full day of activities. After breakfast, the youth led the students in a vibrant session of praise and worship, filling the room with joy and enthusiasm.
To break the ice, students participated in a fun activity called “The Chosen One!” which allowed them to introduce themselves through a game that encouraged interaction and communication, that was prepared by Edwin Francis Xavier. This was followed by the first session, led by Jonathan, on the topic of “Merciful Father”. He covered foundational teachings on who God is and the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice, focusing on the penitential act, the importance of confession, and guiding students through the steps of reconciliation.
After a nourishing lunch, the students took part in a reflective activity designed by Edwin Francis Xavier to prepare them for confession, helping them understand its role in their spiritual journey. This set the stage for the next session on the Body and Blood of Jesus, led by Jennifer and her team. They explained the order of the Mass, the meaning behind the Last Supper, and the importance of reverence. In a creative twist, students decorated plates inspired by the Last Supper, bringing their own personal touches to this sacred tradition.
To close the day, an energizing group activity was held before ending with a prayer and attending the sunset Mass, making it a fulfilling end to a beautiful day of learning and connection.
The second day began with breakfast, prayer, and a lively session of action songs, setting a joyful tone. Isaac and team, then led a session titled “Me and God, Me and Family”, helping the children understand the significance of their relationships with God and family. Through skits, students reflected on the importance of receiving Christ during the First Holy Communion and how this sacrament can protect them from temptation and negativity. The session encouraged them to embrace their faith and cherish the bonds with their families.
The day concluded with an exciting treasure hunt that helped the students forge stronger connections with each other, followed by a group activity where they created skits to perform for their parents. Through these skits, they showcased what they had learned, filling their parents’ hearts with pride and joy.
We are truly grateful for the support and dedication of our youths who lent their time, energy, and love to this holy communion formation. Their contributions helped create a memorable and impactful experience for each child.
As these children prepare to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion, let us hold them in our prayers, trusting that this camp has strengthened their spiritual journey. May their faith continue to grow, and may they walk confidently in Christ’s love as they take this blessed step forward.
