Little Hearts Prepared for a Big Encounter with Jesus
At the end of most Catechetical years, teachers are often thanked for their dedication and passion in guiding the children. However, this article is a little different. It is written to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Standard 3 Holy Communion students of St. Joseph’s Church Sentul. Over the course of 2025, these young souls worked diligently in preparation for one of the most significant moments of their lives—their First Holy Communion. Week after week, they eagerly asked, “How much longer until we can receive Jesus?” Their excitement grew as they approached the day, and it was evident in the enthusiasm with which they participated in every step of their journey.
A true highlight was their Holy Communion camp, where the children spent a weekend filled with learning, laughter, prayer, and reflection. The joy and energy of the camp then transitioned into a deeper, more reverent mood as they prepared for their first Confession just days later. They took this preparation seriously, diligently learning the Act of Contrition and asking thoughtful questions to ensure they were well-prepared. Throughout this process, they remained prayerful and reverent, and we couldn’t be prouder of them for this.
Another memorable moment in their journey was the beautiful performance they presented to a full hall of loved ones. In one of our classes, the children learned about the various roles that Jesus plays in our lives. They spent time reflecting on who Jesus is to them and then expressed these personal insights on posters, which they later presented during their performance. The sight of these little evangelists, dressed in their Holy Communion white attire, looking like angels, was a beautiful sight. They held up their posters, some read “Jesus is my best friend,” “Jesus is my heart,” “Jesus is my hero,” and “Jesus is my everything.” To witness their innocence and love for Jesus, in their own words, was a moment that touched our hearts deeply.
As educators, there are few greater joys than seeing our students grow in kindness, love, and care. Throughout the year, these children showed us, time and again, what it means to live out their faith in small but meaningful ways. From simple acts like “Teacher, can I pray for you?” and “Teacher, let me share my book with you,” to “I gave food to someone sitting on the street”, “Teacher, do you need help cleaning up?” and “Teacher, I am happy you are my teacher” – they reminded us that, like Mother Teresa, we are called to do small things with great love. In their own special ways, they have imparted many lessons to us, teachers. It has truly been a delight and brought us much joy, being their teacher.
We would like to extend our deepest thanks, first and foremost, to the Almighty God for blessing these children throughout the year. Our heartfelt gratitude also goes to our parish priests, Rev. Fr. Frederick and Msgr. James, parents, Godparents, principal, CRT members, youths, altar servers, choir, and all the other ministries who contributed so tirelessly to the preparations for the Holy Communion day and the many important events leading up to it. Your unwavering support and dedication have made this journey possible, and for that, we are truly grateful.
