There was an air of gaiety in Dewan Msgr Anthony Thomas as Parishioners streamed in after the morning masses on Sunday 9 June to celebrate Father’s Day.
The event was organised by the Women’s Ministry team with the support of the Youth Ministry, both the Sri Lankan and Myanmar communities, as well as members from other ministries.
The morning began with a good Breakfast spread of stir fried mee hoon, curry puffs, doughnuts, cake and fruit, and coffee for all who attended.
A number of fun events were lined up for the day. Nothing elaborate and time consuming but instead it was a very” light and easy” and fun filled morning.
Emcees for the day, Victoria and Juliet did a great job keeping the crowd entertained.
A cake cutting ceremony kicked off the activities for the day. Resident Priest, Rev. Msgr James Gnanapiragasam officiated the event.
Fun games and activities were organised for all fathers present. A saree draping contest was held and Father’s were made to dress up their wives in a saree. That got the crowd roaring with laughter. Some fathers actually did a decent job of it, with some emulating Bollywood movie style “Saree scene” antics, much to the crowd’s delight.
There was also a little treasure hunt organised for the Father’s which had them frantically running all over the place searching for items from whoever they could, and not limited to just their wives alone.
The highlight of the morning was of course the “Uniform Costume Contest.

We had a “headmaster” struttiing on stage with cane and book in hand. Some father’s came dressed in traditional outfits ( Indian and Myanmar outfits). There were also some dressed up as technicians from various fields, and a retired army officer with his medals displayed, took to the “catwalk” with much ease. A heavily masked up professional painter and a Covid era frontliner got the crowd all ecstatic. It was the frontliner who stole the show and was eventually declared the winner. The professional painter was the runner up, while the traditionally dressed up Myanmar couple came in third.
Kudos to the Women’s Ministry and all volunteers for a great job done honouring fathers.
