Accessibility in the house of worship seminar was organised by Suhakam (Human Rights Commission of Malaysia) at Hotel Primara KL on 18th March 2019. The invitation to this seminar was extended to Eagle”s Wing Ministry (EWM), Wheels and Faith And Light Community by The Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur Most Rev. Julian Leow who also attended this seminar with Rev. Fr. Gregory Chan. We represented the Catholic Church. Representatives from various religious organizations, NGOs, government and private sectors and media were also present.
Suhakam created a meaningful platform at this seminar for the differently abled to share how they feel in regards to accessibility, education and employment. Many issues were discussed but the main focus was on the difficulties the differently abled face in going to places of worship. Many houses of worship are still not accessible for the differently abled to pray and attend functions.
No one should be deprived from fulfilling their religious obligations. We hope that after all that has been shared and discussed, all the suggestions and ideas that have been brought forward during this session will bear fruit and will be implemented soon for the good of not only the differently abled but also for the aging society. It is not our disability that cripples us but the lack of accessibility and sensitivity of the people which is more crippling.
