112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2026

112 World Day of Migrants and Refugees

KUALA LUMPUR, 20 September 2026 — More than 1,500 people gathered at the Church of St Joseph, Sentul, to celebrate the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Organised by the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur Migrant Ministry in collaboration with the parish, the celebration brought together migrant and local communities for prayer, food, cultural performances and fellowship.

The day’s theme, “Even Just One of These Children” (Matthew 18:10), invited participants to reflect on the welcome and care owed to every child, particularly those whose families have had to leave their homes. Communities represented included Myanmar, Pakistan, Indonesia, Nigeria, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, alongside local communities.

Archbishop Julian Leow presided at a solemn multilingual Mass, concelebrated by priests including Fr Christopher W. Soosaipillai, Fr Frederick Joseph, Fr Robert Kham, Fr Sixtus Thawng and Fr Mike Idoko. Representatives of seven communities carrying their national flags joined the entrance procession, reflecting the many languages and cultures united in worship.

Among the guests were Ms Leyla Nugmanova, Deputy Representative of UNHCR Malaysia; Vice Consul Kirstoff Gail Ocampo; and Ms Jocelyn Ortega, Philippine Labour Attaché at MWO Kuala Lumpur. Representatives of AOHD’s umbrella ministries also attended the Mass, including Ms Susan, Mr and Mrs Audrey, Mr Sean, Mr Sellwyn and Ms Cheryl K. Their presence affirmed the importance of working together to support migrants and refugees.

Following Mass, an opening ceremony and the release of doves marked the start of the day’s festivities. A cultural dance by local communities, with special participation from Butterfly Community Centre, set a joyful tone. Food stalls offered traditional dishes and gave visitors a chance to meet, share stories and enjoy one another’s company.

Thirteen groups took part in Migrants Got Talent, including performers from Butterfly Community Centre, EduCare and migrant communities, as well as groups from the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist and the Church of Our Lady of Fatima. Local talents and solo performers from migrant communities also gave special performances.

The 2025 champions, the St Lourdes team (OLL Klang) – Indonesia, returned to perform their winning dance before handing over the trophy to the 2026 champions, the Myanmar group, who performed Thway Chinn Tote Yae Myay. Sri Lankan dancers took second place with their rendition of Kolattam, while the Harmonic Cape Guitar, Filipino  group from St John won third place.

Traditional dress awards recognised participants representing Nigerian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani, Sabahan and Javanese cultures. The Sri Lankan community also won the award for the best decorated food stall. A lucky draw, featuring more than 100 prizes and ten major prizes, added to the celebration.

The gathering gave visible expression to the day’s theme. In prayer, performance and simple acts of hospitality, people from different backgrounds came together as one community, reminded that welcoming even one child is a way of welcoming Christ.

Special thanks to the organising committee for their dedication and work in bringing the celebration together. We also thank the volunteers, participating communities and performers who contributed to the day.
